A group in Calgary announced plans to build a 900 million dollar sports facility that would include a 20,000 seat hockey arena for the Flames and concerts, a 30,000 seat stadium for the Stampeders, and a public sports fieldhouse.

The proposal floated by Flames president Ken King says team owners would kick in 200-million dollars toward the cost. But Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi isn’t ready to jump on the bandwagon.
He calls the proposal intriguing, but says he strongly believes that public money must be for public benefit and not private profit.

The Saddledome, which opened in 1983, is one of the oldest remaining arenas in the N-H-L. McMahon Stadium, where the Stampeders play, opened in 1960 and has been expanded several times over the years.

Below is the concept picture of the project.

An Oiler friend of mine says they won’t really need to build a lot of support for the roof because the Flames only have to hang the one banner…har har.
